Academic Exchanges

Center for Aboriginal Studies at the National Chengchi University (Taiwan)

In October 2007, the Center for Aboriginal Studies at the National Chengchi University, Taiwan, and the Hokkaido University Center for Ainu and Indigenous Studies concluded an agreement to promote academic exchanges and cooperation between the two institutions. Such activities include exchanging faculty members and research fellows, conducting joint research projects and organizing symposiums, and exchanging academic materials and information.

University of Hawaii at Manoa (USA)

On June 30, 2008, HU renewed its Academic Exchange Agreement and Memorandum of Understanding on Student Exchanges with the University of Hawaii at Manoa. In May 2007, the Hawaii university established the Hawai‘inuiākea School of Hawaiian Knowledge, consisting of the Center for Hawaiian Studies and two other organizations. The school runs educational and research programs relating to native Hawaiians in a wide variety of fields including language, history, art and education.
The Hokkaido University Center for Ainu & Indigenous Studies (CAIS) has promoted academic exchanges with the University of Hawaii at Manoa since 2007 through CAIS-sponsored symposiums and other events. An agreement to promote campus-wide exchanges, including student interactions, has been entered into based on the achievements made to date. The renewed agreement is expected to further boost research and education exchanges between the two institutions.

The University of Oklahoma (USA)

In March 2010, Hokkaido University concluded the Academic Exchange Agreement and the Memorandum of Understanding on Student Exchange with University of Oklahoma. The agreement is expected to further energize exchanges between the two institutions.

Center for Sami Studies at the University of Tromso (Norway)

In August 2010, the Center for Sami Studies at the University of Tromso, and the Hokkaido University Center for Ainu and Indigenous Studies coucluded an agreement to promote academic exchanges and cooperation between the two institutions. The agreement is expected to thrive through exchanges in the future.

University of Helsinki (Finland)

In March 2011, Hokkaido University concluded the Academic Exchange Agreement and the Memorandum of Understanding on Student Exchange with University of Helsinki. The agreement is expected to further energize exchanges between the two institutions.

Oxford Centre for Asian Archaeology, Art and Culture, University of Oxford (UK)

In October 2013, Oxford Centre for Asian Archaeology, Art and Culture, University of Oxford, and the Hokkaido University Center for Ainu and Indigenous Studies coucluded an agreement to promote academic exchanges and cooperation between the two institutions. The agreement is expected to thrive through exchanges in the future.

University of Aberdeen (UK)

In May 2014, University of Aberdeen and Hokkaido University concluded an agreement to promote academic exchanges and cooperation between the two institutions. The agreement is expected to thrive through exchanges in the future.

⑧ Center for Indigenous Studies, National Taiwan University (Taiwan)

On March 17, 2017, the signing of an academic exchange agreement with the Center for Indigenous Studies at National Taiwan University took place. We have been exchanging information with the Center for Aboriginal Studies through international symposiums held during the University’s Sustainability Week. In the future, the two institutions plan to exchange faculty members and researchers, exchange academic materials, publications, and information, and conduct joint research and symposiums.

Novosibirsk State University (Russia)

On September 15, 2020, the signing of an academic exchange agreement with Novosibirsk State University took place.

National Ainu Museum and Park UPOPOI (Shiraoi,Hokkaido)

On November 13, 2020, an academic collaboration agreement was signed with the National Ainu Museum.

Indigenous Student Resource Center, Tunghai University (Taiwan)

On June 3, 2021, an academic exchange agreement was signed with the Indigenous Student Resource Center of Tunghai University in Taiwan.
